DECT Standards Online                                                             
Reflecting a new policy of encouraging less bureaucracy, easier access and more rapid implementation of standards, ETSI has recently implemented a mechanism whereby its technical standards can now be downloaded for personal use on-line from their website.    A number of  DECTweb members have asked us how to obtain full technical details of the many DECT standards.   Well, now it's as easy as visiting DECTweb - just click to our ETSI Standards Page and you'll find a link through to the relevant page of the ETSI website with full instructions.

New DECT RF Components
The new TRF8012 DECT PA from Texas Instruments is sampling 1Q99.  Based on their new RFMOS technology the component complements the TRF1012 transceiver and TRF2052 synthesiser, to allow a low BOM, fast switching RF DECT design.  More details of the devices and the evaluation boards, supplied with software and documentation on the Semiconductors page of DECTweb.

BT Onephone Website Launched  
BT have recently published a range of information on their BT Onephone service, to be launched commercially in the coming months.   An introduction to the BT Onephone service concept can be found on the Dual-Mode Products page of DECTweb, which provides links to the BT Onephone site containing full details, including tariffs.

DECT Market Statistics
New market statistics have been publicly presented recently for 1998 sales of DECT based products.  This information has been consolidated and placed on the new Market Information Page of DECTweb for the benefit of members. 

WDCT - DECT in the USA - ‘Watch this Space’
In September '98 Siemens launched its Worldwide Digital Cordless Telephone, WDCT, range of Gigaset products, based on a derivative of DECT in the US 2.4 GHz ISM band. At the DECT ’99 Congress it was revealed that other manufacturers will be launching similar products using the WDCT standard in the coming months. Refusing to be drawn on who the players would be, a speaker from Siemens essentially said ‘watch this space’. Other speakers also indicated the desire to encourage a wide industry consensus behind WDCT, allowing other manufacturers of DECT products to enter this market whilst ensuring interoperability and hence a larger overall market.

DECT for Wireless Printing and Home Applications 
Will 1999 be the year that DECT wireless data products finally come of age ?
Several  DECT data products were on show at the DECT '99 Congress last month, including the M101 DECT RS232 product from Siemens, available as a special offer to delegates at DM299, and a Canon printer equipped with DECT as part of a wireless printer demo from Dosch & Amand.  The latter company were also showing interworking of ISDN and analogue fax, using their own products and the Siemens TAE - telephone adapter equipment.  Siemens also presented a paper explaining their plans to encourage new entrants to the market by making DECT modules available to OEM manufacturers of DECT wireless products.  Maybe these could be a competitor to the proposed HomeRF/SWAP technology for domestic wireless applications, after all the low cost DECT technology and standards are already available and market proven.

Wireless Websurfer     
RSC / INESC demonstrated a wireless websurfing pad, using DECT technology, at the DECT ’99 Congress.  About 30cm by 20cm, the lightweight, portable, wirefree touchscreen pad included the facility to call up a soft keyboard to type in web addresses and wirelessly surf the Web. New DECT Multi Media Consortium Announced
At the DECT ’99 Congress in January the formation of a new consortium was announced specifically to address the multimedia markets for DECT.  Launch members comprise Ericsson, Hagenuk, Ascom, National Semiconductor, Dosch & Amand, Deutsche Telekom and Canon, with five further new members likely to be announced shortly. One of the key goals of the consortium is to create an added market for DECT in the area of multimedia products - eg cordless printers, cordless cameras, etc, capable of automatic networking. Membership of the consortium is open, with a membership fee of 10kEuro and associate membership also available at 3kEuro.

January 1999 New below:

AirTalk - UK Launch for Corporate DECT Service  
"AirTalk" is the brand of the new BT DECT business service aimed at exploiting the growing adoption of DECT PABX's in the UK.   AirTalk utilises multicell DECT to offer the corporate business market a range of mobility services supported by DECT technology.  Philips Business Communications will be supplying BT with systems based around their SOPHO series of DECT equipment to as part of this service.
