The Worldwide Market for DECT in Residential and Cordless WPABX Applications:
DECT set to Cannibalise European Analogue Cordless Phone Market

In 1996 less than 20% of residential cordless phones shipped in Europe were DECT cordless phones.  The reason that DECT represented such a small proportion of the market was that DECT phones were priced considerably higher than their analogue counterparts.

However, according to a new market report from the market research company IMS this price differential is rapidly dissappearing. "The average retail price of a DECT phone in 2003 will be the same, if not less, than the main European standard for analogue cordless phones, CT-1" stated Alex Green, a senior analyst at IMS.

This will result in DECT swiftly eroding the overall European residential cordless phone market at the expense of traditional analogue solutions. IMS estimates that in 1998 nearly 40% of all residential cordless phones sold in Europe were DECT types. This means that there were nearly 9million DECT handsets shipped. IMS projects that the proportion of cordless phones shipped in Europe that are DECT will have increased dramatically to nearly 90% by 2003. This means that the market will have grown to a huge 28 million handsets in 2003.
