DECT '98 World
Congress - Barcelona, Spain - organised by IBC, 27-29th January 1998, with speakers from Europe, North and South America, China. Conference Report on
the DECT Forum website
Conference Report - kindly submitted to DECTweb by Walter Tuttlebee, conference chairman
"The conference covered all aspects of DECT- technology, products and markets, with
updates on DECT in all regions of the world. Presenters included representatives of the
major DECT product manufacturers, telecom operators, component vendors and test equiment
manufacturers and test houses, as well as representatives of the DECT Forum. Sessions were
entitled:
DECT Review - status, markets, standards, world
review, Internet
DECT Around the World
Onsite Business Mobility
Residential DECT
Wireless Local Loop
DECT Networks
DECT Terminals
Future DECT Applications
"Key themes emerging were:
Wireless local loop - a sense of maturity emerged in the presentations. Some self
criticism indicated a confidence that equipment capabilities are maturing and that DECT is
indeed a very viable WLL global solution. Reported orders for DECT WLL lines during 1997
were substantial, supporting such a view. Over 150 different DECT WLL installations were
listed in a publication distributed by the DECT Forum, some commercial installations, some
trials.
"DECT ISDN products are already available. Due to country specific differences the early markets will be Germany, where the cost of ISDN access is lower than elsewhere in Europe.
"Data products, long awaited, seem finally to have arrived. A DECT PCMCIA module was shown by one of the delegates from Philips. An impressive demonstration of live Internet surfing using a PCMCIA DECT module and ISDN base station was shown by Dolsch and Amand.
"A DECT still camera product was alluded to in a talk from Siemens to be shown at CeBIT 98. Other companies developing DECT multimedia products also presented papers.
"GSM/DECT dual mode handsets - little progress since last year, but it would seem things are happening quietly - watch CeBIT.
"Prospects for DECT (PWT) in North America were painted as very rosy by a presenter from Freepoint Telecom, who anticipated that market growth there could even outstrip Europe within a few years."
